English is taught creatively in all areas of the curriculum. It is divided into key areas:

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar): Children learn spellings through focusing on spellings patterns and applying spelling rules in their writing. Children in KS2 have a daily SPaG lesson which is in addition to their daily literacy lesson. During SPaG lessons, children will learn about word classes, sentence construction, punctuation and the appropriate grammatical terms of their year group.

Reading: children will learn to recognise, understand and enjoy the written word and develop a love of books. Phonics is taught in the EYFS and KS1 and is taught through a range of resources including the Read, Write Inc scheme. We use a range of different banded books to support and develop early reading skills and as children progress they begin to read books from our Accelerated Reading scheme.

Writing: children will learn to express ideas in writing, developing a clear handwriting style whilst being exposed to a variety of genres which are taught through the class topics.  Each half term, all children from Year 1 to Year 6 take part in a whole school writing task called ‘Write Away, Right Away’.  Two children from each class are chosen as ‘Awesome Authors’ and their writing will feature on the Write Away blog which you can find a link to at the bottom of this page.

The best way you can help your children to read easily and with enjoyment is to talk and listen to them as much as possible, answering questions from an early age and trying to involve your children in a variety of interesting experiences.  Above all, read to your children as often as you can.  Even when your children can read for themselves, do not stop reading aloud to them.  You will be able to introduce them to texts that are beyond their reach and which will stimulate them and extend their vocabulary and experience.

If you’d like to discuss anything further or have any questions about English lessons in Constantine, please come and see Miss Paine.
