Separating Mixtures in Science 13 May 2013

In our science lesson today we learned about separating materials. Mr Wild mixed together some materials:
Sand and salt;
glitter and sugar;
rice, sand and sugar;
pasta and rice;
flour and small beads.
We learned how sieving, filtering, dissolving and heating could be used to separate the solids. We experimented through investigative play how to using various scientific apparatus to separate materials.
Did you know that a mixture of sand, rice and sugar can be separated firstly by sieving, then by dissolving the sugar by adding water and stirring, then by filtering, and finally, to capture the sugar from the sugar solution, by heating and evaporating?
